Message from Mark Bruzzone:

Last week, I joined over 1,600 CEOs across Australia to take part in the 2021 Vinnies CEO Sleepout.

In doing so, I gave up many of the familiar comforts that are often taken for granted. My warm, comfortable bed was replaced with cold, hard concrete. My safe and secure home with a cardboard box. A hearty, homemade meal with a humble cup of soup.

It was a cold, uncomfortable and restless night but I would not trade a minute of it because it gave me a very small glimpse into the harsh reality that over 116,000 Australians are experiencing homelessness right now – 28,000 of these are in New South Wales. A severe lack of social and affordable housing joined with a range of complex social issues makes homelessness a complex problem in our state, but last night we became part of the solution by raising $8.3 million of critical funds for people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage.

I am back in my own warm bed. But unfortunately, this is not an option for the men, women, and children who have no home to return to.

Just because the event has come to an end, it does not mean that Australia’s homelessness crisis is even close to ending. We hope the money raised to date, will assist Vinnies and the community in a big way, and we couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support!

I would like to thank Robin Craig, Darren Soy, Lachlan Saunders, and Joseph Boyle who volunteered to assist Vinnies set up the event last night, and all our volunteers who continue to assist with the Vinnies Van providing friendship, compassion and dignity to those experiencing homelessness and social isolation.

It has been a wonderful team effort by Abergeldie to help build a better community.
