Barwon Water Mains Renewal Program

Abergeldie DKM has been working with Barwon Water to renew their water mains infrastructure over the last 7 years. The current contract has been held since 2021 and targets the replacement of reticulated water mains that pose a risk to customer supply.

Under the current contract, 14km of renewed pipelines have been installed within the Barwon Water service area which stretches over 8,100 square kilometres, from Little River and the Bellarine Peninsula in the east, to Colac in the west, and from Meredith and Cressy in the north, to Apollo Bay on Victoria’s south-west coast.

The current program features 121 water renewal projects of varying complexities, classified as either short pipelines (<100m in length) or long pipelines (>100m in length).

Scope of Works

The works to renew the water mains have involved the laying of fusion-welded polyethylene (PE) pipes in various sizes, ranging in diameter from 100mm and 150mm and occasionally up to 300mm in diameter. Our multi-skilled workforce, construction methodology and modern “no-dig” equipment delivers the work in accordance with the required standards and ensures flexibility when required.

The engagement includes the provision of all labour, supervision, materials, equipment, overheads, administration, taxes, wages, accommodation, transport, allowances, consumables, testing services and other incidental costs to replace water mains within Barwon Water’s service area.

Complexity

The majority of works under the Barwon Water Mains Renewal Program are carried out within a 50km radius of the Geelong CBD. Where possible, pipes are replaced using trenchless methods, reducing the impact on local residents and the surrounding environment. Where trenchless methods are not practical, pipes are replaced via open trench and lift and relay methods.

Prior to commencement of any works, affected residents and businesses are notified. During works, affected residents and businesses are connected to a temporary water supply line. This typically runs alongside the footpath along front fences or boundaries. This temporary line may cross footpaths and driveways and remains in place throughout construction. Once the pipe replacements have been completed, the new pipes are flushed, and water quality is tested before customers are reconnected. Surrounding nature strips, pavement and roads affected by works are then restored within a few weeks. Any restoration works are coordinated with local councils.
