The works generally involve the renewal of water mains identified by Greater Western Water in its water main renewal program.

The pre-construction activities include:

• Advising the proposed renewal method and preparing design drawings and identifying project specific customer needs. 
• Site inspections to identify and work through customer/construction issues prior to construction.
• Liaison with road authorities and councils on traffic management and access permissions
• Communicating with bus and train companies about the impacts of the works on their services  
• Gaining access permissions from Council, Catchment Management Authorities, Melbourne Water and any other stakeholders. 
• Dial Before You Dig investigations. 
• Obtaining environmental, heritage and catchment management authority approvals.  
• Submission of applicable quality management documentation
• Pre-construction customer consultation and management activities in accordance with the customer/community engagement framework set by Greater Western Water.
• Customer Notifications prior to commencement of works.
• Visits to Customers Property as required.
• Identification of isolation and shutdown and temporary water supply arrangements
• Erecting appropriate signage to warn residents and traffic of any proposed changes to traffic conditions. 
• Maintain and install, on site, Great Western Water's project information signs, including the removal of signs after construction. 
• Proving of and constructing “around” other authorities’ assets/obstructions. 

The construction and rehabilitation activities generally include:

• Supply of all labour and plant
• Traffic management
• Renewal of existing water mains by in-situ replacement or conventional construction methods
• Installation and management of temporary water supply to customers
• Isolation and shutdown of existing mains as required
• Water quality testing, commissioning and recharging of existing water mains
• Reinstatement and clean up.
• Survey and provision of as constructed information and drawings
• Defect liability services

The works under the Greater Western Water Main Renewal Programs have been undertaken in the Greater Western Water service area. The works vary size and complexity, from simpler renewals in the outer suburbs and towns to more complex renewals in dense and residential areas.

The Abergeldie DKM team has worked effectively with stakeholders, including residents, businesses, councils, transport authorities and the client to provide advance notification of works.

The works have also been undertaken within both greenfield and brownfield environments with a variety of terrains, geotechnical and cultural heritage conditions encountered and managed.

The temporary works to maintain potable and recycled water supplies have applied to all projects, with a dedicated crew onsite prior to commencement of construction and eliminating manual handling of work.
