Abergeldie and Transport for NSW (TfNSW) delivered the Broadmeadow Station Upgrade under the Transport Access Program. The upgrade has provided modern infrastructure designed and constructed with a greater focus on accessibility, prioritising equal access for individuals with additional needs or limited mobility.

Scope of Works

The works included:

  • The construction of 3 lift wells.
  • Installation of modern passenger lifts.
  • Construction of a new electrical substation and conduit connections.
  • Upgrades to station stairs, ramps, and subways to meet modern accessibility standards.
  • Amenity upgrades, including the construction of rain shelters, on all 4 platforms.

Complexity

The project team undertook meticulous planning for weekend rail possession periods, where two shift teams worked diligently on excavation and piling to construct the lift well. The electrical demand created by the new lifts necessitated the construction of a new electrical substation, and corresponding conduit connections, which run underneath the rail tracks and were installed using directional drilling.

To achieve minimal disruption, whilst ensuring public safety, the work periods were carefully staged to allow concurrent public access and work on the station platforms, the station entrance, and pedestrian tunnels beneath the track.
