2018

Abergeldie collaborated with Sydney Trains to install 2,200m of new track at the Hornsby Maintenance Centre. The works reinstated tracks 4 to 7 under a Sydney Trains Master Services Agreement for continuous rail infrastructure upgrades in the Sydney area, servicing the growing demand for public transport through Northern Sydney communities.

Scope of works

The scope of work included:

  • Sandblasting and priming rail in 110m segments at Chullora in preparation for delivery to Hornsby.
  • Cleaning and priming of channels in concrete slabs on roads 4,5,6, and 7 at Hornsby to receive the prepared rails.
  • Placement, welding and alignment of the rails at Hornsby using the Edilon Sedra embedded rail system (ERS).
  • Reconstruction of approximately 61m of track on the city end of all four roads.

Accelerating the program through collaboration

Preparatory works were originally planned to be completed directly adjacent to the installation point; however, to accommodate other contractors at Hornsby, the location was changed to Chullora. This change significantly altered the sequence of works, accelerating the program.

The Edilon Sedra system required careful monitoring to ensure the installation was completed at the right temperature and manually poured at the appropriate time. The project team worked collaboratively to ensure the sequence of works was followed, and the project was delivered within the budget and the required timeframe.

Futureproofing for increased demand

The Hornsby Maintenance Depot, a train depot in North Sydney that first opened in 1928, is responsible for the stabling and maintenance of all trains on the Northern, North Shore, and Western Lines, making it an integral part of the train network. The installation of new track caters to Sydney’s increasing demand for public transport.
