Lansdowne Bridge Replacement

Transport for NSW
2018 - 2019

Abergeldie collaborated with Transport for NSW (TfNSW) to construct the Lansdowne Bridge replacement. The project aimed to enhance road safety with wider lanes, improved approaches, and a shared path over the Mulwaree River in Goulburn.

Scope of works

The  works included:

  • Construction of an 82.93m concrete Lansdowne Bridge over Mulwaree River.
  • An approximate 400m upgrade and realignment of the existing two-lane Bungonia Road approach to the new bridge, including earthworks, pavements, sealed shoulders, shared path, kerb, and gutters.
  • An approximate 220m upgrade and realignment of the existing two-lane Forbes Street approach to the new bridge and intersection reconfiguration with Bungonia Road.
  • Construction of reinforced concrete retaining walls, barriers and installation of stormwater drainage, utility adjustments, property adjustments, line marking, and signage.

Technically complex, working over the Mulwaree River

The project was delivered under GC21 contract conditions, in close collaboration with TfNSW design consultants and relevant third parties, including utility service owners.

A project-specific rock access platform was designed and constructed to provide a stable platform for the piling rig to sit on. The rock platform was designed to be sympathetic to the local environment and could withstand loads created by a piling rig installing piles and a 250t crane installing bridge beams. With limited space on the work platform, works were intricately staged to allow room for the machinery to complete each task.

There were significant heritage items and environmentally sensitive habitats within the construction area, protection measures for which were detailed in the Construction Environmental Management Plan.

Abergeldie worked closely with TfNSW on communications to inform the local community. A number of nearby properties were restricted with access due to the project works. The Abergeldie site team assisted these and provided access to their properties throughout the works.

To minimise waste, all excavated material was repurposed by the local council for the construction of approach roads.

A new bridge restoring access for residents, delivered ahead of schedule

The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, with zero major safety, environmental or quality issues. Proactive early warnings and innovative approaches to the bridge and retaining wall construction were instrumental in averting delays and cost overruns. The project notably exceeded the target for Aboriginal Participation and most importantly has restored access for residents, providing a link via Bungonia Road across the river.
