Abergeldie was engaged by Sydney Metro to construct a state-of-the-art speedway for Western Sydney as part of the Sydney Metro West initiative. This addition to the Sydney Dragway, located at Western Sydney Parklands’ Precinct 5: Eastern Creek Motor Sports, contributes towards creating a true Motorplex for the Australian motorsport racing community. The construction included 3.5km of pavement, roundabout modifications, and the provision of 2,800 parking spaces.

Scope of works

The works included:

  • The construction of a new clay-based racetrack catering to both speedway cars and motorcycles, ensuring an enhanced racing experience.
  • A new grandstand, terraced seating for 7,000 spectators, and comprehensive amenities including corporate boxes, food, beverage, and merchandise outlets.
  • Construction of 2,800 new parking spaces and dual vehicle access via a new intersection built off Ferrers Road.
  • Construction of a dedicated competitor pit area, including workshops, garages, and trackside support services.

Innovative modular construction

This large-scale construction project has drawn on the latest innovations in modular construction for retaining walls, water detention tanks and grandstands to deliver an impressive amount of work in a tight timeframe. An incredible achievement for our project team was bringing the project to completion on time, to make the 2021/2022 racing season - despite ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the NSW Government’s Sydney construction pause and the self-management of 5,000 tonnes of contaminated material onsite. The completed Speedway is a world-class facility compliant with Speedway Australia’s 5 Star Track Standards - the highest rating possible.

Additionally, the project team exceeded the industry participation targets set by Sydney Metro for indigenous and local workforce and through our supply chain, engaging small and medium enterprises, including Aboriginal businesses.
