Archerfield Wetlands Shared Path

QLD
Brisbane City Council
2021 - 2022

Abergeldie was engaged by Brisbane Sustainability Agency (BSA), a subsidiary of Brisbane City Council, to deliver the 3km Archerfield Wetlands Shared Path – an integral project within the Oxley Creek Transformation Master Plan. The broader plan aims to rejuvenate a 20km stretch along the Oxley Creek corridor into a green lifestyle destination. The project was completed with zero environmental non-conformances, incidents, or injuries and was awarded a CCF QLD Earth Award in the $2-5m category in 2022.

Scope of works

The works included:

  • Excavation works.
  • Construction of a 3km path linking Gleneagles Cresent, Oxley, and Bowhill Road, Durack.
  • Construction of a 450m walking trail to a wetland’s lookout.
  • Construction of 4 culvert waterway crossings.

Environmental-focused construction and flood resilience

Strict environmental controls and hold points were implemented to ensure the project was carried out with the highest regard for the environment whilst also respecting the cultural heritage and past use of the land. An arborist was engaged onsite during all heavy machinery work around tree protection zones. Where possible, all disturbed areas including waterways and wetlands were re-vegetated.

The shared path was integrated into the environment to withstand flood events without disrupting natural wetland flows. Following completion, the site experienced flooding with no adverse effects on the path's integrity, culvert crossings, or wetland flow.

Managing wet weather

The wet weather encountered during the construction of the Archerfield Wetlands Shared Path exceeded expectations. Despite recurrent heavy rain events causing flooding across the project site and subsequent delays to allow the subgrade to drain, the project team collaborated efficiently to deliver the works.

An environmental asset and leisure destination for locals and visitors

The Archerfield Wetlands Shared Path is the first stage of the Archerfield Wetlands Parkland precinct, fostering connections among people, nature, and an outdoor lifestyle. This project has enhanced the wetland area and supports its natural function as a floodplain. The result is a serene environmental nature walk, providing both locals and visitors with an opportunity to immerse themselves in nature and foster social connections.
