We are delivering critical upgrades to Hunter Water’s Belmont Wastewater Treatment Works to enhance safety and support the long-term performance of the wastewater infrastructure serving communities across the Lake Macquarie region. The project includes the design and construction of a new Odour Control System (OCS) for Hunter Water’s treatment facility, which treats up to 30 megalitres of wastewater per day and services up to 100,000 residents.

The upgrade is being delivered within an operational wastewater treatment facility, requiring careful planning and staged sequencing to maintain ongoing treatment operations. The team is progressively replacing existing covers and installing new odour management infrastructure while working around live wastewater flows and existing plant operations.
With hydrogen sulphide (H2S) levels requiring careful management, the project team is implementing robust controls to support safe delivery in a complex operating environment. This includes detailed planning around access, ventilation and confined space activities to ensure works can progress safely while maintaining the reliability of the treatment process.
A key feature of the upgrade is the introduction of bio-trickling filter technology, providing a more sustainable approach to treating extracted air from the inlet works. The system uses biological processes to treat extracted air from the inlet works, providing effective odour control while reducing reliance on traditional chemical treatment methods.
The new corrosion-resistant fibreglass covers and containment systems are designed to withstand the highly corrosive H2S environment, helping extend asset life and provide Hunter Water with a reliable odour management solution for the future.
