2019 - 2023

Abergeldie, in partnership with WaterNSW, delivered the Blue Mountains Maintaining Capability Program. The program involved the refurbishment and restoration of dams, weirs, regulators, and water supply infrastructure to enhance water delivery systems. It was designed to uphold operational and safety standards, as well as environmental and heritage requirements. The works included multi-staged construction and investigation across seven sites within the Blue Mountains region, ensuring the efficiency and integrity of the infrastructure.

Scope of works

The scope of works delivered improvements across seven sites and included:

  • Replacing existing valves and upgrading structures where required.
  • Undertaking electrical, mechanical, and civil upgrades.
  • Upgrading weirs and pump stations.
  • Performing building maintenance, upgrades, and demolition.
  • Decommissioning redundant systems.
  • Installing compliant de-stratification fan control panels and replacing existing supplies.
  • Upgrading trunnion winches and arms.
  • Conducting building maintenance and demolition.
  • Carrying out concrete repairs, ladder-way replacements, and handrail upgrades.

Staged works to ensure efficiency

Abergeldie developed and implemented a strategic, phased program synchronised with seasonal variations in water inflows to storage dams and customer demand for potable water. The program provided an uninterrupted water supply to meet the needs of local communities. By implementing staged and prioritised site locations, high-priority areas benefited from improved conditions at an accelerated pace, ensuring efficient and effective water management across the various sites.

Enhanced water infrastructure

The Blue Mountains catchment consisted of three smaller catchments: Katoomba (5 km²), Woodford (9.8 km²), and Blackheath (7.2 km²). These dams collectively provided water to approximately 41,000 people across the region, spanning from Mt Victoria to Springwood. The critical works upgraded water supply infrastructure to maintain capacity and meet operational and safety requirements, while ensuring a continuous water supply for the local community.
