Abergeldie was engaged by Brisbane City Council to deliver the Brickyard Road Bridge Replacement project. This involved constructing a 1.8m-wide, 30m bridge connecting Virginia and Geebung in Brisbane, spanning Downfall Creek. The modern structure replaced the original 1930s concrete bridge, which had reached the end of its serviceable life. The new bridge has enhanced access to Virginia State School, Downfall Creek Dog Park, and popular walking and cycling paths.
The scope of work included:
The bridge’s primary structure included a non-standard 26m, 50t girder, lifted into place using a 500t crane. During the tender period, the team identified an opportunity to innovate by pre-casting the bridge diaphragms into the girder, ensuring stability during the lifting operations.
To minimise impact on local businesses and mitigate risks posed by nearby overhead powerlines, works were meticulously planned and Abergeldie carefully planned and executed, with crane operations carried out in off-peak hours. Additionally, 450 cubic metres of asbestos were safely removed, without incident.
Construction over the waterway, classified as medium risk by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, required careful management to ensure uninterrupted water flows throughout the project.to protect local wildlife, including high-risk species such as birds and frogs, a specialist ecologist worked closely with our team to monitor and mitigate any potential impact.
