Abergeldie collaborated with Transport for NSW (TfNSW), to successfully deliver the Chalmers Street and Granville Junction Substations under the Power Supply Upgrade program. This program ensures a resilient and dependable power infrastructure, crucial for the upcoming expansion of the rail network and the seamless integration of a new fleet of air-conditioned metro trains. The enhanced power supply boosts reliability and reduces the likelihood of service disruptions, in turn benefiting Sydney's rail commuters.
The scope of work at both locations was similar, generally comprising:
Careful planning was carried out due to the Chalmers Street Substation’s proximity to heritage-listed items and the operational rail system. Precise excavation and construction was required to prevent damage to heritage structures and ensure seamless integration with existing electrical, telecommunications, and civil infrastructure. Construction occurred in tight spaces, limiting laydown areas, and introducing technical complexity due to proximity to live rail corridors. A detailed Asbestos Management Plan was implemented to identify, monitor, treat and dispose of pockets of bonded asbestos in fill material at the Granville site. The project's success depended on a systematic yet adaptable schedule, with major work elements strategically executed during strict weekend rail possessions.
The project team ensured that the works were carried out to meet Sydney's expanding rail network needs and the introduction of a new train fleet. The enhanced power capacity not only supports the current operations but also improves system reliability, reducing disruption risks. The upgraded capabilities align seamlessly with the new fleet's requirements, strategically positioning Sydney's rail network for future growth and technological advancements.
