Abergeldie was appointed as the principal contractor for the reconditioning of rail track formations at multiple sites in the Hunter Valley, as one package of works within ARTC’s two, year-long program aimed at maintaining and upgrading the Hunter Valley Network.
Significant reconditioning work was done at Hexam (1400m), Sandgate (900m), and Wollar (500m). Additionally, substantial reconditioning works were successfully carried out at Farley, Lochinvar, Werris Creek, Coggan Creek, and Murrurundi. Emergency works were also granted to Abergeldie and were carried out successfully.
Through an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) Abergeldie played a key role in refining and finalising the project scope. Over a 12-month period, Abergeldie priced various project sites as part of a panel of works, securing a significant volume of work at various sites during each possession.
The scope at each location generally comprised of:
Some preparatory works outside the Danger Zone were carried out mid-week adjacent to live rail traffic, however the bulk of works could only be carried out during strictly scheduled weekend rail possession conditions. To take maximum advantage of the limited available time during possessions, works during these periods were programmed on an hour-by-hour basis and closely supervised to ensure on-time hand-back. The works were completed on budget and ahead of schedule.
Several locations posed challenges in spoil management due to significant volumes, demanding careful planning by the delivery teams to ensure the overall success of the project. The client’s Contractor Performance Reports for each project segment consistently indicated a high level of satisfaction, reflecting commendable performance in both project planning and delivery.
The Hunter Valley track reconditioning works are essential maintenance to ensure a safe and reliable network throughout the Hunter Region.
