The OHL – Abergeldie Joint Venture was engaged to upgrade a 2.1km stretch of Schofields Road, spanning from Windsor Road to Tallawong Road.  The scope involved upgrading from two to four lanes, the addition of three signalised intersections, realignment of Tallawong Road, and construction of twin bridges over Second Ponds Creek.

Scope of works

The works included:

1. Two, twin-span road bridges:

  • Rock coring and geotechnical investigation for piling.
  • 1050mm diameter cast-in-place concrete piers.
  • Cast-in-place FRP concrete pile caps.
  • FRP concrete abutments, headstocks, and wing walls.
  • Installation of conduits for electrical, communications and gas lines.
  • Precast, pre-tensioned concrete Super-T girders, 17.6m long.
  • In-situ concrete decking pours over girders.

2. Civil works:

  • Bulk and detailed earthworks for site drainage.
  • Stabilisation of creek bed and banks.
  • Landscaping to medians and verges and implementation of street lighting.
  • Service adjustments and excavation for new reticulation conduits (water, drainage, sewer, gas, electricity, telecommunications).
  • Demolition of redundant structures and minor buildings.

3. Road works:

  • New traffic signals at three intersections.
  • 203m² polythene membrane and 40mpa concrete for bridge approach slabs.
  • Fabrication and installation of traffic barrier railings.
  • Kerbs, gutters, access driveways, footpaths, and cycle paths.
  • Cut and fill earthworks and soil nailing.
  • Heavy duty dense graded asphalt pavement construction; (corrective, intermediate and wearing courses) on lean-mix concrete sub-base.
  • Safety barrier systems.
  • Pavement marking.
  • Road signage.

Complexity

The upgrade to Schofields Road was highly complex. Some of the main challenges included the relocation of overhead and buried service lines, the management of environmental risks with extensive earthworks near a waterway, and minimising disruptions to regular traffic flow. To address these challenges, specialised teams were established to focus on bridgeworks, utility service adjustments, and earthworks. The specialised teams operated concurrently, however, centrally coordinated.

The 2.1km upgrade of Schofields Road and twin bridges over the Seconds Pond Creek were crucial components of the broader plan to link the Rouse Hill and Marsden Park town centres and meet the transport needs of the growing population in Western Sydney.
