Yarra Valley Water (YVW) maintains an ongoing program to progressively rehabilitate its ageing sewer reticulation mains and branch sewers to improve customer service and reliability of supply. YVW prioritises those reticulation mains and branches that require rehabilitation and then issues the works to Abergeldie for design and construction.
Since 2016, Abergeldie has been engaged by YVW to complete works within this sewer mains and reticulation renewals programme. Using various rehabilitation methods, works involve the investigation, design, and construction of the rehabilitation of sewers ranging in diameter from 100mm to 900mm. Within this program, works also involve the rehabilitation of property connection sewers and spot repairs.
Key to our success in this program has been our collaborative approach and shared understanding with YVW. They are across what the team is working on, which teams are on which jobs and have direct access to supervisors.
The scope of work includes:
Abergeldie has used a variety of technologies and methods to install upgrades and renewals on this program. Our crews are trained to use a variety of lining technologies, creating flexibility in deploying crews and giving us greater ability to optimise the scheduling of works across areas with different geographies, different asset conditions and diverse customers.
Consistency of delivery and communication has been key to the successful relationships with YVW, the long-term nature of the contract, and in driving clarity of mutual expectations and quality of delivery. Teams within YVW and Abergeldie have changed during the contract, and consistency of training and supervision has been integral to maintaining consistent delivery for more than five years of the contract.
Abergeldie’s innovations on this programme include the use of multiple lining technologies, including EX, spiral and UV CIPP on pipes ranging in diameter from 150mm to 750mm.
The Australian-manufactured EX PVC fold-and-form pipe lining used on selected works is a trenchless structural pipelining system used for gravity sewer and stormwater networks, which we have used to line circular pipes with diameters ranging from 150mm up to 300mm. PVC folded pipe is softened using steam, inserted into the host pipe then expanded out and formed within the host pipe.
Vent tube replacements have been installed using a bespoke claw on a 6t excavator to install vertical tubes, which has increased productivity and reduced costs from not needing to have cranes on site to install these steel or aluminium tubes.
Works are undertaken across various sites within the YVW catchment area, encompassing suburban roadways, residential and commercial properties, laneways, and park reserves. Our crews and project team work closely with YVW to ensure the program meets the expectations of the communities affected.
The Yarra Valley Water Sewer Mains Renewals programme is essential to provide a safe and reliable sewerage service for more than 2 million people daily and 61,000 businesses.
